Behind the Scenes at Dario Scapitta
What is your name?
My name is Dario Scapitta.
Where did you grow up?
I’m born in Valenza, Italy, one of 3 most important Italian cities for jewelry craft. For more than 7 years I have been living in Enschede, The Netherlands.
What do you love about jewellery?
Jewelry is more personal than clothes. Jewelry is similar to amulets. Jewels can have a particular meaning, remembering a date, celebrate an important moment in our life. A jewel has a personal connection with our soul, but of course we can also buy a jewel just because we love its design and because it fits with our individual look.
When did you discover your love for jewellery?
If you are born in Valenza you must have something related with jewelry. My whole family was in the jewelry field. It was in my destiny I think.
How did you become a jewellery designer?
I’ve studied jewelry design at the highschool, then I’ve studied set and costume design at the Academy of Fine Art in Milan. I’ve tried to do do something different, but then I went back to my home town and started to work as 3d CAD and jewelry designer for jewelry companies for more than 15 years. When I moved to the Netherlands I realized that this was the moment to start working on my own collection, so Dario Scapitta Design was born.
Describe your style, what is most characteristic about your jewellery design?
I’m trying to not focus on seasonal collections. I work following my inspirations, combining materials and technology as 3d printing to create my designs. Elegance, contemporary design and beauty are the main characteristics of my collections.
Which music genre describes your jewellery best?
Jazz, classic and a touch of Pink Martini, one of my favoite groups!
If you could choose one song that describes best your jewellery, which one would you choose?
Una notte a Napoli, Pink Martini
What is your favourite item of your jewellery line?
No one is the favorite, but if I have to choose, it will by my STONE necklace, which was designed for a 3d jewelry contest and ist actaully the beginning of what I’m doing today.
Which exciting things are coming up for your jewellery line? New lines planned?
Since the beginning a lot has changed, a more minimalist influence is guiding my new collections. For the future I’m exploring thr possibility to make my style even more minimal. I’m experimenting with silver and brass and testing these metals in combination with others, but always keeping my overall style theme.

Describe a typical day in your studio?
Wake up and cappuccino. Check Instagram and emails. Make a short plan for the day and check priorities. Then it depends on the day. When you are working alone as independent designer you can not always focus on creating. You have a lot of other things to think about, for example answering questions for a blog post; contact possible clients, keep on working on your collaboration. It's not always easy!
How do you make your jewellery?
It is a mix of technology and handcraft work. I use 3d printing to make my jewels. Each collection is designed using a 3d software. After several tests, the items are then printed in the chosen material. They are then hand finished with the desired finishing effect like gold plating or other color coating or, for example as on my MONOLITE collection, I’m adding a layer of black enamel by hand.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
From everything that sorrounds me, everytime and every day. Nature, art, architecture, design and fashion, these are some of sources. Sometimes it's just a small detail or a simple impression or vision in your mind. This then starts an evolving process which guides you to the final object.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST..
Ring, Earrings, Necklace, Bracelet, or Bangle?
Mountains or beach holiday?
What's your favourite city?
Do you have a favourite jewel that comes with you on all your travels?
I like to keep my secrets! ;)
