Kassandra Lauren Gordon
Where did you grow up?
Different places in the UK. My accent is from Birmingham.
What do you love about jewellery?
Creating precious memories for people.
When did you discover your love for jewellery?
I have fallen in love with jewellery since I was 9 years old. My mum gave me a gold locket at 9 years old. This was the start of my love for jewellery. I knew it was gold and delicate, so I had to take care of it. This was first gold jewellery item. My mum was a single parent, and did not have much money. I knew that she saved, sacrificed and grafted for me for a nearly a year to buy this precious gift. 20 years later I still have it in pristine condition. Every time I see this or wear this locket I feel love, a strong bond between a mother and daughter. I remember my childhood and great Christmases. These memories and warm feelings will never die.
How did you become a jewellery designer?
Once I decided to make jewellery I started learning at Holts Academy in Hatton Gardens. I studied evenings and weekends as well as working full time. Eventually, I built a studio at home in Hackney to continue when I wasn’t at school. I got into stockists in East and West London not long after graduating and had my first show at Craft Central. Since I’ve been at IJL, traded in markets and set up my website.
Describe your style, what most characteristic about your jewellery design?
When I make jewellery, I think about female ambition and a world where women can be their full unadulterated selves. I make versatile jewellery that is designed to be worn seamlessly between professional and casual contexts, with loud pieces added for expressive colour. My aesthetic is minimalistic with organic, textured elements contrasting with geometric shapes. It is always infused with storytelling.
What is your favourite item of your jewellery line?
I love all my pieces of jewellery (they are all my babies), but if I had to choose one. I would choose the Bimbika and Selena’s Dance gold hoops. It’s an elegant loud piece which changes every outfit.
