Behind the Scenes at South African Designer Smith Jewellery

Smith Jewellery Interview | South African Jewellers.

What is your name?

Anna Raimondo:

Where did you grow up?

I was born and bread in Cape Town, South Africa.

What do you love about jewellery?

Making jewellery is like making little architectural structures. These mini sculptures allow me to feel creative but at the same time I have to work through a process allowing me to use my left and right brain.

When did you discover your love for jewellery?

I found jewellery by accident, it was only half way through my studies that I fell in love with jewellery.

How did you become a jewellery designer?

I was actually going to study Journalism at University. When I got there I discovered that they offered Jewellery Design and changed my major as I wanted to do something more creative.

Describe your style, what is most characteristic about your jewellery design?

My jewellery is bold, elegant and easy to wear. I design jewellery that I would like to wear and as a result have created quite a few different collections.

Which music genre describes your jewellery best?

This is a hard one because each collection is quite different from each other. I think Indie Rock would encompass everything best - an alternative option to mainstream jewellery.

What is your favourite item of your jewellery line?

Currently my favourite is the Dot Studs from my latest collection - Grafica; I wear them ALL the time.

What exciting things are coming up for your jewellery line? New lines planned?

I'm working on a unique bridal range. Something that is a little unexpected but still classic and beautiful.

Describe a typical day in your studio?

Obviously, I start with a cup of coffee while going through my emails and doing some admin. I then go into the workshop and either make stock for my stockists or bespoke items for clients. Then in the afternoons I run any errands that I may have ending the day with a nice long walk with my two pups.

How do you make your jewellery?

I make and design all my jewellery by hand.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I know it's cliche, but I really do draw my inspiration from everything around me. It could be a classic movie, shadows cast by city shapes, a wallpaper pattern or just a leaf I find on the ground.

Ring, Earrings, Necklace, Bracelet, or Bangle?

Earring definitely. Most of my collections start with an earring design and go from there.

Mountains or beach holiday?

My ideal holiday would be combination of both.

What's your favourite city?

To live: Cape Town, I really do love everything about my city.
To visit: New York, it's loud and crazy and has some amazing museums.
To Eat: Sydney, it's a melting pot of cultures and has some of the best restaurants.

Do you have a favourite jewel that comes with you on all your travels?

Not really, I have a collection of earrings that come with me.
